We went to the beach today, and as I was sitting in the surf with the baby, I overheard a young Mom yelling at her son. The little boy couldn't have been more than 5 years old, and Mom comes over, looking irritated, and was holding her top up as she was clearly working on getting no tan lines on her shoulders. She then yells at the kid:
"Quit acting retarded before I slap the shit out of you!"
It was pretty loud, and I'm not sure exactly what she was upset about. Although he was pretty close to us, I hadn't been watching the boy (who was playing with a younger boy). However, it didn't seem like they were doing anything really crazy. Maybe she should have considered sitting closer to the water or playing with him instead of tanning almost topless.
She later was calling to him, and (Big Surprise!) he was ignoring her. He wouldn't listen, so she just walked back to her chair. The ocean is pretty dangerous, and it seems that if you're kid isn't listening, the answer is not to just walk back to the chair. She did come back a little later with a friend to move the boys closer to them, but she seemed prett
It was sad to me that she was yelling like that at him in public because then what does she say to him at home? I know I'm being totally judgemental, but I think you bring on the judgement of others when you verbally abuse your kid in public.
