Eat To Live (and hopefully ward off some allergies and asthma)

November has been a busy month.  The baby continues to battle her asthma and was put on oral steroids yet again :-(  So, I decided I needed to see if I can be more proactive somehow, and maybe diet is the way to go.  I read a book called 'Eat to Live' which talks about making sure the food you choose is nutrient-rich (much more plant products) and cites a good deal of research about how certain diets high in certain kinds of food are more likely to cause cancer and other problems.  It seems like it would be fairly obvious, but the scientific studies he cited were very interesting and put it all in a new perspective for me.  Anyway, I've been trying to change our eating habits a bit to be more healthy as well as to maybe try to help the asthma and allergies in our house get better.  I"m not sure if it's working, but it's only been a couple of weeks and I haven't followed the book's recommendations 100%.

We have been eating much more vegetarian like - lots of vegetable (minestrone) soup, salads, fresh fruits, veggies and mushrooms.  I've been trying new foods (not all have turned out well of course) and trying to eat less meat and pasta, which is hard in a house where my girls ask for pasta for breakfast.  We've cut out milk and only have almond milk (which you can cook with), and I've been sneaking ground flax into recipes whenever I can.

It is definitely a challenge since it seems like I"m going to the grocery store every stinkin' day, but that becomes necessary when you are eating mostly fresh products.  I should probably stock up on frozen stuff as well, but I haven't gotten that organized yet.

The holidays are putting a slight damper on my mission, but I actually am finding myself looking forward to Thanksgiving a little more than normal because it will really be a treat!  It continues to be a little more time-consuming than normal because I really need to search for new ideas for meals.  I'm trying to use my easy-go-to of pasta much less, but I will continue to try.  I've noticed my body seems happier this way, and so I'm sure the kids feel that as well.  I've bought the companion book 'Disease proof your child' as well, but haven't gotten through it yet.  I'm hoping the recipes in there will be liked by everyone in this house!

If you are familiar with this and have good recipes, I'd love to hear them!  If not, it may be worth reading the book.
